Electrical Repairs & Fault Finding in the Hawkesbury

When a circuit keeps tripping, a power point stops working or the lights flicker for no obvious reason, you want someone who will find the actual cause rather than swap parts until it goes away. That is most of what we do day to day for homes around Richmond, Windsor and the wider Hawkesbury.

Common faults we get called out for

  • Safety switch (RCD) tripping and not resetting
  • Circuits that trip when a particular appliance is used
  • Power points or switches that are dead, loose, scorched or warm to touch
  • Lights flickering, buzzing or not working on one circuit
  • Partial loss of power to part of the house
  • Outdoor power points and lights damaged by weather
  • Smoke alarms chirping, false-alarming or past their replacement date

How fault finding works

Tripping is the safety switch doing its job — something on that circuit is leaking current to earth. The usual suspects are an appliance, water getting into an outdoor fitting, a damaged cable or an old light fitting breaking down. We isolate circuits, test insulation resistance and work through the circuit until the fault is located.

Before we call, it helps if you note what was running when it tripped, whether it happens in wet weather, and whether unplugging everything on the circuit stops it. Those details often shorten the job.

Replacement switches and power points (GPOs)

Cracked, loose or discoloured power points and switches are worth replacing before they fail completely. We can swap like-for-like, upgrade to double power points, add USB power points in kitchens and bedrooms, or move to a different style to match a renovation.

Smoke alarms

NSW requires working smoke alarms in every home. Alarms have a limited service life — the manufacture or expiry date is printed on the base. We replace old alarms, hard-wire new ones and can interconnect them so one going off sets off the rest.

Electrical maintenance for older homes

A lot of Hawkesbury homes have had decades of additions — a granny flat here, a pool pump there, a shed wired by a previous owner. If you have bought an older place or something just doesn't feel right, we can check the switchboard, test circuits and give you a straight list of what needs attention now and what can wait.

Frequently asked questions

My safety switch keeps tripping. Is it the switch that is faulty?

Occasionally, but in most cases the safety switch is working correctly and responding to a fault on the circuit — commonly an appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or damaged wiring. Fault finding identifies which.

Can I keep resetting a tripping circuit?

If it trips again straight away or keeps tripping, leave it off and call an electrician. Repeated resetting doesn't fix the cause and can make it harder to trace.

Do you do small jobs like replacing one power point?

Yes. If you have a few small things on a list, send them through together and we can sort them in one visit.

How often should smoke alarms be replaced?

Most manufacturers specify around 10 years. Check the date on the base of the alarm; if it is past that or missing, it's time to replace it.
